What is an autoclave? what are they used for?

An autoclave is essentially a big pressure vessel that can be heated to be an oven under pressure. The composite part is placed in a vacuum bag and evacuated, then it is placed inside the sealed autoclave and cured under heat and pressure. The advantage of curing a composite layup in an autoclave is that the polymers cure better and faster under heat and the pressure compacts the layers of wet composite material to minimize voids and create a better fused material.
