What are the different kinds of carbon fiber? How are they classified?

The various heat treatments used in the manufacture of carbon fibres are extremely complex and those for different product groups tend to overlap. In that respect it is sensible to define the bands not in terms of high temperature treatment (HTT) or individual products, but rather in terms of tensile modulus. We can thus define any carbon fibre as follows:

Standard Modulus           up to 250GPa 
Intermediate Modulus       250-350 GPa
High Modulus.              350-500 GPa
Ultra-High Modulus.        greater than 500 GPa
